| Nové Město na Moravě and sports Nové Město na Moravě is the most famous winter sports resort in Vysočina. The main ski activities concentrate to the northwest of Nové Město to the ski resort by the SKI Hotel. This is a starting point of the well known cross-country ski tracks to the area of the Ochoz forest. As early as since 1934 the famous ski competition "Zlatá lyže Českomoravské vysočiny" (Golden Ski of Českomoravská vysočina) is held in Nové Město na Moravě, which has been a part of the World Cup since 1981. A number of pupils of the local sports club represented the Czech Republic at the world championships and at winter Olympic games (e.g. Otakar Německý, Cyril Musil, Dagmar Švubová-Palečková etc.). To the present world top belong Luboš Buchta, Jiří Teplý, Martin Koukal and Aleš Vaněk. The ski resort by the SKI hotel is also the starting point for amateur skiers, there start three cross-country ski tracks of various lengths. For the downhill skiers there is a ski lift available on Harusův Hill till the end of March with the possibility of night skiing, in the nearby Zubří also a ski lift with snow tubing. Except for the world known competition Zlatá lyže Českomoravské vysočiny (Golden Ski of Českomoravská vysočina) a big number of competitions in cross-country skiing are held in Nové Město, as well as in northern combination, alpine skiing, winter triathlon and pair competition. Competitions of dog-teams and a ski carnival add to diversification of the calendar of winter events. Thanks to the slightly downy terrain, clean environment and a dense network of well market tourist and cycle track routes in the environs the town is also a sought-after centre of tourism and cycle tourism. A number of rock formations in the northern part of the region attract not only walking tourists, but also climbers. In the surroundings there are several training climbing walls. It is therefore no wonder that the Nové Město native, the alpinist Radek Jaroš, climbed the world's highest mountain Mount Everest (8848 m) on 19th May, 1998 at 14:10 of the Peking time.
